It seems like suddenly, "emerging designers"are everywhere. From television shows like Project Runway, to fashion weeks in cities like Providence and Charlotte, we are clearly on the lookout for the next new thing, and we're not just looking in New York, Milan or Paris. This is a good thing! There are many excellent designers, from all around the world, who may not necessarily have the capital (or the desire) to move to one of the fashion capitols. Many of these designers are partnering with eCommerce entrepreneurs to create access to their unique designs. One such business, started right here in the Boston area, is Kevala.
Kevala founder Smita Deshpande decided to start the business after being introduced to a number of imaginative, modern designers in India. Deshpande worked with the designers to create lines for American audiences - and each design only comes in a limited production (we're talking exactly one dress in each style and size), so the chances of running into someone in the same dress is extremely, extremely limited. Garments range from dresses to tunics (like the top I am wearing in these outfit photos) and are made from high-quality silks and cottons. Many showcase hand-crafted embellishments. But what I love most about Kevala is that the company gives credit where credit is due - instead of the designers producing unknown work for major companies, they are particularly noted both on the website and as part of the purchase.

ReplyDeleteI have a great respect for emerging designers and I admire their ambition and their power of will, because I realize how difficult it must be for a young designer to make a name for themselves.
I go to Toronto Fashion Week regularly, and last time when I went, in October 2011 showcasing SS collections for 2012, I saw the show of a young designer, Michelle Watson, who established her brand Michi in 2010. It was her debut at Toronto Fashion Week, and it was the first time when I've heard about her. Fashion weeks is a great opportunity for young designers to make their voice heard, even though those fashion weeks are not in big cities like the cities you mentioned in your post.
