Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I'm still working on my New Year's resolutions (as in, trying to decide what they should be, not, you know, actually working on them). This year, I'm taking a cue from the office and creating goals with the SMART formula. You've probably heard that term from your HR department - it means the goals you set should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. For example, instead of saying, "I plan to save money", you might say, "I will save 10% of every paycheck this year."

Some of my goals sound awfully silly! For instance, I set a goal to get a manicure every week (If I don't, I bite my nails!). I also set a goal to call or email two friends a week just to say hello (part of 'spending more time with friends and family'). What are some of your goals this year? Do you have any tips on how to keep your resolutions?

  4. Last year I Greg and I tried to make a resolution to stay in better touch with friends. We started off making a list of all the friends we didn't see or talk to often enough, but there were some people we wanted to see frequently and others we were okay with talking to once or twice a year. So we divided into categories (weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc). Soon we were ordering within the categories. Suddenly we realized we were comparing, ranking and prioritizing our friends. It felt wrong, so we ended up dropping the whole SMART format and just making a general effort to get out more. We might have to adopt the "two phone calls or emails a week" approach this year - much nicer!

    1. Wow - I hear you - sometimes we try so hard to be organized we take it a little too far! It's great that we want to be better / do better!

  5. One hundred percent obsessed with this outfit and especially that bag! One of my biggest goals for 2013 is to be better at keeping in touch with friends and distant family-- through phone and snailmail. I'm not sure how I'm going to stick to the phone part, but I plan on stocking up on cute stationary to take care of the letter-writing part :) Happy New Year love!
