Model T

What is it about wearing a short, black dress that makes you feel so chic? The ubiquitous little black dress is a classic for many reasons: you can find one at any price point, it's versatile, a neutral color and, I'm told, slimming. And while there may have been LBDs before her, Coco Chanel herself "invented" the dress in 1926, publishing a simple, short black frock in American Vogue. The dress was "Chanel's Ford"; workhorse apparel suitable for a number of occasions that would not easily show dirt. Later, Hollywood stars would don black dresses in movies, as the Technicolor distorted other colors. And you know how we like to emulate celebrity style! The LBD was here to stay.

  1. That's a super-flattering dress. I like it with the cardigan.

Seriously, can the leaves and lighting stay this way all year? So pretty...

  5. that particular LBD is gorgeous! I have to ask, though. If the LBD is supposed to be a dress we can wear anywhere, why do we (or at least me) have 10 different versions of it in my closet right now? :D

  6. @A Stylized Hysteria This, my friend, is a question for the ages. I suspect because we keep finding ones we like? Because they are so gosh darn easy to like?

  14. Vintage Valentino you say? I'm super, super jealous. I bet you have some great vintage shops in Boston... have you ever done a "Where to Shop" post on vintage stores? I don't have any tripes to Boston planned or anything, but I like to keep posts like that bookmarked JUST IN CASE. I like to be prepared, haha.
