What to Wear to a Game in Boston

what to wear to a Patriots game, Boston Blogger, Boston Fashion Blogger

We've all heard the jokes about Boston's fashion scene revolving around Red Sox caps. And I won't lie, when I pulled on a Celtics hoodie this weekend, Mr. TBF was dubious. "How fashion-y!", he laughed. Look, there is nothing wrong with showing your fan-dom. Here's how to keep your game-day-gear nothing but net:

Don't double letter: Back when God was a child, I pledged a sorority at a large state university. I was pretty psyched to join, and was excited to wear my "letters" (the greek symbols that represented the name of the sorority) on my tees/athletic shorts/baseball caps, etc... (A good thing about getting older - no longer wearing athletic shorts and baseball caps.) One rule of thumb for showing our sorority pride - "don't double letter". The same applies to your favorite sports team. Wearing a Patriots hoodie? Great! You don't need a Patriots hat, gloves and scarf to go along with it.

Pick a piece that fits: So many fan tees and sweatshirts are made for men or boys. These can lead to your item being way too big, or with not enough room in the bust. Plenty of companies now make athletic gear for women at a reasonable price (this hoodie is from Forever 21!). Fit is everything, both in terms of comfort, and looking good.

Wear team colors: This advice can go two ways: (a) Don't have a Bruins tee-shirt? Fine - wear a gold sweater with black jeans. You'll look chic and totally game-day appropriate. (b) Considering a fan item in a color other than your teams' colors (ahem, pink)? Don't.

Keep your footwear flat: I realize I'm a little outside the lines with over-the-knee boots, but these are comfortable and protect my feet from spilled sodas and crushed popcorn. You know what doesn't do that? Stiletto sandals. There is no place for high heels at a game.

Up your game: A tee with jeans and a pair of athletic sneakers looks like you came to play. A tee with jeans, Chuck Taylors and a fitted blazer looks like you came to play. You know the difference.

I know many readers are avid Boston sports fans - what do you wear to a game (or a game-day party)?

How to Wear a Denim Vest, Part II

How to style a denim vest

Ways to wear a denim vest

You may remember I recently wrote about how I'd be wearing this denim vest all summer. Well, I wasn't kidding! I've been throwing it on over every sundress I own - it's an easy way to add a layering piece without a lot of bulk (and who wants bulk in July?). Seriously, LBD + vest + Keds = chic, cool summer outfit!

This denim vest is one of those trend pieces I plan to wear all summer - don't be surprised when you see it popping up in a number of posts over the next few months! In our cooler days of spring, I am loving it over an otherwise neutral gray and black outfit.

On a personal note: Today (Thursday), I'll be spending my day at Mr. TBF's graduation. Congratulations on your Master's degree, sweetheart! I am so proud of you!!

How to Wear Leather Pants

My style is office-appropriate during the week, but lately my weekends have been all (p)leather pants. I've been wearing them in place of jeans or leggings, and they make me feel...well...just a little tiny bit like a rock star. I won't lie - I first wore these with a bit of trepidation. There are a lot of things I am 'too' to wear leather leggings. Too old? Too sartorially conservative? Too employed in an occupation other than rock star? Clearly, I'm over the 'terrible toos'; you've seen me wear these leggings several times already, with a fur vest and a sparkly jacket. Maybe next time I'll try to pair them with something more conservative, like a simple chambray shirt, or a classic black blazer. Are you wearing leather pants? How would you style them?

Sequin Sleeves & Leather Pants (How to Wear Leather Pants)

Just a little weekend sequins! I wore this to a soirĂ©e at Cynthia Rowley on Newbury Street hosted by my lovely friend, ScorpionDisco. (Think I need to go back for this dress.)

P.S. What's up with that graffiti? There are dead babies in Old Thompson? Drink Better Booze? No, I didn't notice until I got home and was editing the photos. Must pay better attention!

How to Stay Warm While Looking Chic

If there is one fashion quandary, universal to all Bostonians (and many others), it's this: How do you look chic when it's freezing outside? It's a question I ponder literally every morning, as I prepare to take the long walk down a windy street to my bus stop. I have lived in Boston for eight winters now, and at the end of each one, I swear to myself that, next year, I am totally going to break down and purchase a giant, puffy coat. But I never do. Because giant puffy coats, while being incredibly warm, are...well....giant and puffy. But this year I am resolved - no more inappropriate outerwear when it's ten degrees! So I was delighted when Nau (pronounced 'now'), a sustainable, design-focused purveyor of urban and outwear opened a pop up shop on Newbury Street. I sat down with Emily Dennis, Assistant Manager at Nau, to discuss looking chic while staying warm. Her tips:
  • Natural fibers work best. They're breathable, and whisk moisture away from the skin.
  • Down coats need not be giant and puffy. They just need a high fill power
  • Make sure you have a water and windproof shell over all your layers.
