How to Stay Warm While Looking Chic

If there is one fashion quandary, universal to all Bostonians (and many others), it's this: How do you look chic when it's freezing outside? It's a question I ponder literally every morning, as I prepare to take the long walk down a windy street to my bus stop. I have lived in Boston for eight winters now, and at the end of each one, I swear to myself that, next year, I am totally going to break down and purchase a giant, puffy coat. But I never do. Because giant puffy coats, while being incredibly warm, are...well....giant and puffy. But this year I am resolved - no more inappropriate outerwear when it's ten degrees! So I was delighted when Nau (pronounced 'now'), a sustainable, design-focused purveyor of urban and outwear opened a pop up shop on Newbury Street. I sat down with Emily Dennis, Assistant Manager at Nau, to discuss looking chic while staying warm. Her tips:
  • Natural fibers work best. They're breathable, and whisk moisture away from the skin.
  • Down coats need not be giant and puffy. They just need a high fill power
  • Make sure you have a water and windproof shell over all your layers.

    1. You'll be impressed! I stopped by there when they first opened and fell in love with their design. You won't believe how cute (and warm) the jackets are!

  2. You're a natural on camera. I love when you said, "it's wool?!? it's not itchy!" So cute! I love the dress and coat. Added to my Christmas list... :)

    1. Emily and I had a lot of fun filming, actually. She's really a natural! That cocoon coat (the puffer) is totally on my Christmas list, too...

  3. I just got back from visiting my brother in Switzerland and looking cute while staying warm is definitely hard! Layering is key and all of these things are great for just that. Thanks for sharing.

    1. It's hard to tell in the video, but that dress is adorable - it has a kicky little pleat on the side, that keeps it from being just a basic blah T shirt dress. And it IS so crazy soft...

  4. Honestly, I always feel like I look like an eskimo or else I'm freezing here! But these coats are seriously stylish and look like a very chic way to stay warm :)

    1. You and me both, Alex. Yesterday I was wearing a full on coat in my office - people kept saying, "Are you really cold in here?" YES! Another reason I like the little M2 dress - so warm, without looking bundled up.

    1. I'm so glad it was useful! It IS so hard in the winter - you just want to bundle up in all the soft clothes you own!

  6. you're so cute on camera! love the video. i like to stick with being in denial of winter-putting on a summer dress and throwing a vintage coat over the situation! but emily's solutions are fab as well ;)
